Green Grandma

The Green Grandma, otherwise know as Hana Haatainen-Caye, started her blog to get in touch with readers who wanted to learn about real-world strategies for feeling and looking their best. She often features articles about easy solutions for the home and has a popular feature section called Vinegar Fridays.

Check out our informative Q and A with Hana:

Q: What motivated you to start your blog?

A: Following the birth of my first grandchild in 2008, I became passionate about cloth diapers and eliminating toxins from her life. One day, while hanging her diapers on the line to dry, I decided I wanted to share my concerns and solutions with other moms. My cousin suggested I start a blog, and in Aug. 2009, Green Grandma was born.

Q: Vinegar Fridays are really popular on your blog. So popular that you wrote a book! Tell us about it!

A: After a year of writing about vinegar every Friday, I stared at my computer one Thursday night and thought, I have nothing else to say about vinegar! So I wrote a poem announcing the end of Vinegar Fridays. There was an outcry in the GG community, “You can’t quit Vinegar Fridays!” So I promised them a book.

I compiled all the information from the posts and arranged it into chapters focused on various subjects, such as laundry, cleaning, pet care, cooking, etc.  I even included a children’s story called Soft Feet, Macaroni Salad and a Roomful of Scary Monsters. Of course, the remedy is a spray bottle of vinegar!

I reinstated the weekly feature on the blog after the book came out in November 2011.

Q: You have a lot of experience with Hyland’s products. Which are some of your favorites and why?

A: I’ve been familiar with Hyland’s for years, mostly due to the Leg Cramp formula, which I love. I never go out of town without my Leg Cramp pills in tow! I’ve suffered from leg and foot cramps nearly all of my life and this is the only thing that works. And it works so quickly. Since the tablets dissolve under the tongue, I keep a bottle by my bed for middle of the night attacks.

I’m also fond of the apis mellifica, which is effective in relieving hives. And I’ve found the phosphorus to work as well as Imodium in stopping diarrhea, without the side effect of constipation, often brought on by Imodium.

Q: Describe one of your favorite posts and please provide the link.

A: Wow. That’s a loaded question. After over 1160 posts, it’s hard to pick just one.  I enjoyed writing My Green Gratitude List, so perhaps that’s worth sharing. It gives readers a glimpse into who I am and what drives me. http://thegreengrandma.blogspot.com/2012/11/my-green-gratitude-list.html

Q: Any news or events coming up that you can tell us to look out for?

A: Well, I’m in the process of converting Vinegar Fridays into an ebook, so I’m excited about that. I’ll be appearing at local festivals and speaking at writers’ conferences throughout the spring and summer. And I was interviewed recently on The Best Ever You show on Blog Talk Radio.
